About Companion Care

A friend, not a service.

We are a Rochester nonprofit connecting lonely and isolated neighbors of every age and ability with caring companions across Monroe County and the Finger Lakes.

Our mission

To end loneliness and social isolation in our region by building lasting friendships between neighbors, free of charge, with dignity and joy on both sides.

We began where most good ideas begin: around a kitchen table in Rochester, when a handful of friends noticed how many people on their own street had gone quiet. We believe connection is a basic human need and that no one should have to pay for it.

How it works

  1. Ask

You, a family member, a neighbor or a social worker asks for a companion by form or phone. There is no cost and no paperwork about your health.

  2. Match

A staff member calls to talk about your interests, languages and schedule, then introduces a trained, background-checked volunteer who fits.

  3. Belong

Your companion visits, calls or goes out with you for at least a year. Staff check in monthly and are always one phone call away.

What we do

  • Weekly friendly visits, calls and outings
  • Group meals, coffee hours and clubs
  • ASL, Spanish, Nepali, Arabic, Swahili and Burmese companions
  • Tech buddies for video calls and tablets
  • Short companion hours so family caregivers can rest

What we do not do

  • Medical care, nursing or health assessments
  • Personal care: bathing, dressing, toileting, feeding
  • Medication reminders or administration
  • Housekeeping or home repair
  • Handling anyone’s money or legal affairs

For those needs, we will connect you to 211, Lifespan of Greater Rochester or Eldersource.
